Berlin, 1941. Five friends eager to become heroes in an adventure that will change the face of Europe - and that will forever change them as well. Level-headed, highly decorated officer Wilhelm is off to the eastern front with his younger brother Friedhelm, a sensitive dreamer more interested in literature than warfare. Deeply in love with Wilhelm is Charlotte, a young nurse who looks forward to serving in the Wehrmacht, also on the eastern front. While Greta is a talented singer who longs to become another Marlene Dietrich, her Jewish boyfriend Viktor still cannot convince his parents to leave Germany… Valor and courage come to the fore, but also betrayal - of values, beliefs, humanity. Friedhelm turns into a soulless killing machine… Wilhelm deserts his troops and is court-martialed… Charlotte's Nazi ideology crumbles when she betrays a Jewish nurse helping the German army… Greta obtains papers for Viktor's escape by selling herself to an SS colonel. They and millions of others wanted to be heroes; but none of them could imagine what the war would ultimately do to them and to the rest of the world.

I have just watched the final episode of the mini series (shown in Ireland with English subtitles). To be honest, I understand why some reviewers are angry at the depiction of the AK&#39;s anti-semitism. There is no doubt that anti-semitism was prevalent throughout Europe (and still is to some extent), lets not forget that local support was essential in the Europe wide round up of the Jewish population. This was certainly true in central and eastern Europe. However, the scene where the AK partisans cruelly left a consignment of holocaust victims locked in a train was simply an unnecessary and offensive exaggeration. <br/><br/>The AK leader is a poorly and lazily drawn caricature, and this is my problem with the series as a whole; the writing is simply awful. The plot depends on a series of most unlikely chance meetings on what was a crowded, chaotic and fast moving front. The story develops with coincidence following coincidence, in an almost childish manner. It was truly farcical and detracted from the intent to depict events in gritty realism (ala Band of Brothers). <br/><br/>As regards representing the historical context, I think it was fair enough (with the obvious exception of the AK extreme anti-semitism). The German people in general supported the war (not just Nazis). The war in the east was most brutal and barbaric with no regard for the Geneva Convention.. The Wehrmacht were guilty of war crimes (not just Nazis, SS and Einsatzgruppen) . The Red Army also committed war crimes. Anti-semitism was widespread. <br/><br/>Pity about the writing.
This TV movie was enjoyable to watch thanks to the ambitious young actors and actresses as well as the money poured into the sets and costumes. I&#39;m vulnerable to melodrama in my older age, even when I&#39;m aware of such sloppily gnawing at my heart strings. But what GENERATION WAR proves is that today&#39;s young German folk are apparently as far removed from the true brainwashing and horror of the Nazi Third Reich as are young Americans. GENERATION WAR&#39;s fab five characters are conveniently drawn with little genuine responsibility and -more critically- appear blissfully ignorant of the ideology that would have had to permeate their young minds through Goebbel&#39;s manure. Indeed people of that age at that time and place were entirely victims of a political phenomena that, given the right circumstances, could happen anywhere at anytime (yes, in America today, just look around you). But to suggest that none of our five twenty-somethings picked up the Third Reich&#39;s banner to any significant degree is disingenuous. Charley&#39;s character is a bit too sweet to be credible. There&#39;s a young German actress named Anjorka Strechel that would have been a perfect fit.
The perverse thrill of seeing less-than-popular considerations of Nazism on screen fades hurriedly to the old ache of seeing any kind of questions about Nazism answered noxiously.
Does anyone know when this incredible mini series will be released on dvd in Ireland?
